Pets Impacted By Hurricanes Receive Help from Pet King Brands

Posted - November 6, 2024

As natural disasters impact the lives of millions of Americans every year, pets in affected areas are among the most vulnerable. They can be injured by flying debris, exposed to many hazards, and are very stressed out when scary weather occurs.

Fortunately, caring people are stepping up to ensure pets affected by hurricanes receive much-needed help. Pet King Brands, leader of the veterinarian-recommended ZYMOX® and Oratene® pet health products, has launched disaster relief initiatives to support shelters and rescue organizations caring for displaced and injured pets.

Here’s everything you need to know about how to help Pet King Brands help pets, the efforts made so far, and how to prepare your pet for natural disasters.
Pets Impacted by Hurricanes
Pet King Brands actively supports animal organizations impacted by Hurricanes Helene and Milton. The first goal is to provide essential supplies to shelters and rescues affected by these natural disasters.

First, essential supplies were sent to shelters via Amazon Wishlists. Generators were sent to Rocky Top Rescue in East Tennessee for distribution in North Carolina and Florida. Equine supplies and other product donations have also been sent.

“We understand the challenges rescues and shelters face during weather crises,” said Debra Decker, Pet King Brands Director of Marketing. “We created a landing page for rescues and shelters to use in need of supplies.”

Interested shelters and rescues assisting animals after the recent hurricanes are encouraged to visit the ZYMOX landing page for assistance.

Some of the shelters and rescues Pet King Brands has assisted thus far include:

Hurricane Safety for Pets

Helping pets during hurricanes or other natural disasters requires preparation and quick action. In addition to creating an emergency kit for your pets, have an evacuation plan.

Creating an evacuation plan includes:

  1. Research pet-friendly hotels or shelters ahead of time.
  2. Ensure your dog or cat has identification and is microchipped.
  3. Pet crates or kennels should be available with familiar bedding inside them.
  4. Practice evacuation plans with all family members so everyone knows how to act and where to go.
  5. Monitor weather alerts so you are not surprised or taken off guard.
  6. When authorities warn residents to evacuate, follow their orders,
  7. Transportation plans should be in place. Have a full tank of gas.
  8. Keep your pet as calm as possible. Calming blankets, familiar toys, and any veterinarian-prescribed medications or relaxing agents should be available.

Florida veterinarian Dr. Lindsey Butzer has written and spoken of pets who go missing during natural disasters. She says there is a good chance someone will find your pet and take them to a shelter or veterinary clinic if microchipped.

“A tip for cat owners is to leave the garage door 5 to 10 inches open so their cat can sneak inside if they find their way home,” Dr. Butzer shared in an interview. “And I always recommend using the sound of rattling food in a bowl to entice your pet to come home and loudly calling for them in the distance so they can hear and recognize your voice to come home. “
